The original campus plans for the University of Florida at Gainesville were developed by the firm of Edwards & Walter. Edwards & Walter were contracted to design and layout the campus buildings in 1905. Additional plans were developed by the firm's successor, Edward and Sayward. Lester Leonard Hale was born July 6, 1913 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. After a stint as an instructor of speech at Louisiana State University, where he received his Master's (1935) and doctoral (1942) degrees, he joined the University of Florida's Dept. of Speech in 1935. From 1935 to 1939 he was also director of the Florida Players. In 1956, he was appointed Dean of Men and was promoted to Dean of Student Affairs in 1960. Robert Colder Beaty was the University of Florida's second Dean of Students. He came to Florida in 1926 as assistant secretary for the campus YMCA after serving with the YMCA at Vanderbilt University and Georgia Tech. He accepted a position as Assistant Dean of Students in 1928 and became Dean in 1939. He served as Dean of Men from 1949 to 1955 and then Dean of Student Personnel until his retirement in 1960.
